October 31, 2008 by diana

Chipotles Boo-Rito Day (free burrito if you dress like a burrito)

I'm told that you can just wrap some aluminum foil around your finger and it counts as a costume.

The flier from Chipotles states:

Burritos, tacos and bowls, Oh my!

Come in on Halloween dressed like a

Chipotle burrito, taco, bowl or salad

and we'll complete your costume with a

FREE BURRITO.

Anniversary Wish

July 8, 2008 by wizbang

Would it be possible to wish a 75-Year Cub Fan a Happy 60th wedding anniversary wish by one of the fine announcers during a game? If possible I would like the annoncer to wish Bill and Eunice Roberts a Happy 60th Anniversary. It was celebrated on the 12th of June. Thank You for your consideration.

Cedar Rapids Flood of 2008

June 13, 2008 by cubsnet

bilde2 At noon on Wednesday, June 11, I was sitting in my 11th floor office, three blocks away from the Cedar River, with no idea that we would be affected by the few areas that were being evacuated. Our office building sits on the outside border of the 500 year flood plain zone. At that point, the river was still supposed to crest at 22 feet or so. The previous record, set in 1929, was 20 feet.

Three hours later we were told that all power downtown would be shut off and that we were included within an expanded mandatory evacuation area. At 4pm, I drove home over the only remaining open downtown bridge on 2nd avenue. Just after getting over the bridge, I drove through a block with water just about up to the bottom of my car. The 2nd Ave. bridge was going to be closed at 8pm. They ended up closing it at 6pm, leaving I-380 the only way to get from one side of the river to the other.

bilde3 On Thursday morning, I was without internet access at home, so unable to get much work done. I received a call from my pastor saying that our church basement had flooded. Our church is nowhere near the river, but that area of town had lost power and the sump pump had stopped working. Normally an 8 minute drive, I was able to make it to the church in about 30 minutes. 15 minutes after I arrived, the power came back on, and several of us were able to get Shop-Vacs going. We had all the water out within a couple of hours. I then received a call from my mom telling me that the city was about to close I-380. I left immediately, was able to get on the interstate, and made it home in about 55 minutes. (They eventually only closed the left lane.)

As I drove over the river on I-380 both on the way to the church and on the way home, I could not believe what I saw. Businesses and homes around the downtown area with water up past their windows. The entire downtown area has turned into a giant lake. The amount of devastation will not be knowable until the water recedes. Certainly many homes, businesses, and historic buildings are going to have significant damage.

bilde On Thursday, we were told that the river would crest at 24.5. By later in the day, the forecast had jumped to 28.5 feet. By evening, the forecast had jumped to 31 feet. As I write this at 9am on Friday, the newest forecast is that the crest will be at 32 feet in about 4 hours. Again, the previous record was 20 feet, in 1929. Nothing like this has even been seen. We are so far beyond the 500 year flood level that nothing like this was ever contemplated.

Our water supply is severely threatened. We have been directed to use water for drinking purposes only, a direction that may last for a couple of weeks. We are unlikely to have power downtown for a week.

Cedar Rapids is just one of many cities and towns in Iowa severely affected by the flooding of varying rivers.

Thankfully, there have been no reports of deaths from the flooding.

Here is some information about the flood:

A New Cubs Fan Enters the World

January 15, 2007 by cubsnet

A second heir to the CubsNet.com empire has been born. Meet Noah Michael Steffens, born Friday night, January 12, weighing in at 7 lbs, 2 oz. He and Mom are both doing very well. He has a left kidney problem that may ultimately prevent him from playing tackle football if it doesn't resolve itself without surgery, but won't prevent him from learning to turn a double play.

The day after his sister was born, I held her in my arms in the hospital room as we watched the Cubs beat the Braves in 15 innings.

Two days after Noah was born, we watched the Bears win their first playoff game in 13 years.

Children are truly a blessing. If only they knew what they were getting into by being born and raised to be Cubs fans.

Anniversary gift for Cubs fans

For some reason my friends and family give me anniversary gifts. Anyway, I knew what this was before I had the blanket out of the wrapping. The colors gave it away.

Hit-a-way advice wanted

August 11, 2006 by diana

Advice requested regarding the Hit a way trainer.

I bought a Hit-a-way softball trainer and need to get a pole for it.

The basketball pole here is too big and the thing falls off.

The Hit-A-Way Baseball and Pole Combo sells for around $100 and is out of my price range. I've tried shopping around the internet for a cheaper price for this item, but with no success.

Anyway, I'm looking for another alternative, because $100 for a poll seems a bit steep.

The pole in concrete seems like a plan.

Anyway, I'm guessing someone here has one of these and might have solutions for this project.

I Need Help From a Cubs Fan

July 12, 2006 by mrmejw

My brother-in-law is getting married in September. He and his wife-to-be met at Wrigley Field two years ago. I know it’s a long shot but I am trying to find some memorabilia from that night to be framed. Ideally I would want to find a lineup card or official score card but a game day program or something would be amazing.

The game that I am looking for is May 19th 2004. It was against the Giants where Moises Alou hit a 10th inning homerun to put the Cubs over San Fran.

If anyone has anything that they would be willing to sell or any ideas on where I could look, it would be much appreciated.

My email is johnawells@gmail.com and my AIM screen name is mrmejw.

I'm back. Did I miss anything?

May 17, 2006 by diana

Hey everyone!

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile, but I had to make a bit of an emergency trip to Florida to help an ailing relative.

3500+ miles later, I'm back.

It was difficult following the Cubs in Florida. The West Coast games (starting at 10pm Florida time) resulted in no game reports in the next day's USA Today.

Comcast Sports Chicago isn't available there, and even finding a game on the radio was unlikely. I couldn't get in WGN-AM there.

WGN-TV was available there, but some of the cable systems really need to tune it in better.

Ronnie the Collie was put to work as a therapy dog, meeting people at three nursing homes / rehab facilities while we were there.

So, did I miss anything?

I have a hunch the Cubbies haven't done well during my trip.
