Tonight's game is on Comcast Sports Chicago PLUS and CLTV, with a pregame show starting a half hour earlier than gametime.

Note to Comcast: PLEASE place some program listings on the empty channel that carries the Comcast Sports Chicago PLUS games. (In areas that don't get CLTV). It would make it easier for fans to find the games, especially those using Tivo searches, etc.

The Comeback Season

Hello,

I just wanted to let everyone know about a book I've written called THE COMEBACK SEASON. It's intended for young adults, but at its heart, is a story about what it means to be a Cubs fan, and about the way they teach us to hope. I love this site, and would really appreciate any help in spreading the word to everyone out there in Cubdom!

Here's the Amazon link to the book:

Cheers,
Jennifer E. Smith

Steve Stone to be Analyst on White Sox Radio Broadcasts

From the Chicago Tribune: "As recently as Sunday, Stone planned to call just 13 Friday Sox home games, serve as a three-days-a-week baseball analyst for WSCR-AM 670 and perhaps continue his postseason work for TBS. Then Sox vice president Brooks Boyer called to ask if he wanted a roster spot on the Sox broadcast team. Within 36 hours, the one-year contract was done."

(Hat tip: Baseball Primer.)

He's calling games for the wrong Chicago team. How did it come to this? Wrigleyville23 blames Dusty.

Enough With the Daily Articles on the Unsettled Lineup

Lou Piniella may not have had a consistent lineup this season, but the Chicago dailies have been running a consistent theme lately: lamenting the changing lineup. Tuesday's Chicago Tribune treats us to Dave van Dyck's "All Cubs know is who's on first." (Well, and third, and left, and catcher.) Why is it so important to the Chicago MSM to have a settled lineup? The Cubs entered Monday's games 6th in the National League in runs per game (4.9), and well above the league average (4.44), and rising. And that is with the outfield having shown almost no power during the month of April. It is not a bad thing that the manager mixes and matches to put forth the best lineup that day. It is not as if Piniella is doing things like putting Neifi Perez (or, as the case may be, Cesar Izturis) at the top of the order. And it is not a bad thing that the Cubs finally have some bench players worth playing. I don't blame Piniella if he is "growing weary and more than a little impatient with questions about his lineup choices." I'm growing weary with articles discussing the beat reporters' collective obsession.

SunTimes putting Cubs owner Tribune on "trial".

Quote from the front page of the Chicago Sun Times...

Tribune on trial

Quote:
It's the trial of the century in the Court of Public Opinion.
Case No. 1908, the People of Chicago vs. Tribune Co.
The charge: gross negligence and neglect in its ownership of the Chicago Cubs.

Andy Masur Takes Job With Padres

The Cubs radio booth is a man down. "Masur, who spent the last eight years on Cubs broadcasts, including
five seasons doing one-half inning of play-by-play during Pat Hughes' breaks, agreed to a two-year deal with an option for 2009 to serve as play-by-play and color man on Padres' radio broadcasts," reports the Chicago Tribune. "Masur will join veteran Padres announcers Jerry Coleman and Ted Leitner in the booth and do up to three innings of play-by-play and six innings of color, plus pregame interviews."

Steve Stone may go to the Nationals

With Bob Brenly not getting much attention for the managerial openings and thus staying in the Cubs' broadcast booth, the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan gives us an update on Steve Stone:

Finding Buck McHenry (movie w/ Ernie Banks in it)

My Tivo has been saving the Finding Buck McHenry movie since it aired from the tv listing that I wrote about last winter. My family finally got around to watching it last night. Finding Buck McHenry is a very watchable kids baseball movie that we all enjoyed viewing. Ernie Banks has a role in the movie, so part of watching is finding out where his character fits in the story.

The storyline came from the book of the same title.

The movie reminded me of my work on a college magazine where we interviewed a retired player from the negro leagues who was living in Southern Illinois. (I was the photographer.) I'll have to find that magazine to see who it was an re-read it. It was a long time ago.
