Sosa to Nationals, Soriano to Cubs?

The Chicago Tribune's Dave van Dyck speculates that, if Sammy Sosa signs with the Washington Nationals, that could lead the Nationals to trade Alfonso Soriano to the Cubs. That's because Sosa would play leftfield, which is where Soriano is currently slotted. Of course, Soriano, team player that he is, keeps saying he won't play the outfield, which is why the Nationals would want to get rid of him, as they already have Jose Vidro at second base.

But the fact that the Nationals have Vidro at second also makes it unlikely that the Cubs would seek Soriano. The Cubs already have the three-headed monster at second. To acquire Soriano, they'd want to unload 1 or 2 of those second basemen (after all, if Soriano isn't going to play the outfield in Washington D.C., he's not going to play it in Chicago). The Nationals don't need a second baseman, however, because they have Vidro.

In short, van Dyck got a column out of the speculation and I got a blog post out of van Dyck's column, but this isn't likely to go anywhere.

I would pass on Soriano anyway...

There seems to have been lots of talk about Soriano over the last few years and it has sounded like Cubs management covets him. He is a talent, but am I alone in thinking the last thing the Cubbies need is another 100+ strikeout guy w/ no fundamentals? The speed is nice, but I'd rather have someone who can get on base and/or move runners into scoring position for Lee and Ramirez than a 30HR, 125 whiff, .309 OBP guy. Plus he doesn't sound like a team player..

Sosa

Why is Sosa even contemplating a decline on this offer? Nobody wants him, and he's lucky to get offered what he did. It's either this or retire.

Just say no...

to Soriano. Look at his stats away from the Ballpark in Arlington, a hitters paradise, of 224/265/374 and add in his horrible glove which is why they want to move him to LF. You could be looking at a player who combines Walker's glove with Perez's bat and all for the price of $10M.

OK, he won't be that bad, but he's hugely overpaid and not even an upgrade.
