TV listings for Cubs fans - September 2007

For telecast info regarding individual Cubs games, check out the cubs.com schedules at:

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/schedule/index.jsp?c_id=chc&m=9&y=2007
and
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/chc/schedule/broadcast.jsp

So far, the above page doesn't list telecast info for the Cubs/Cardinals game on Sept 10.
I'm also wondering if they'll have a special promotion givaway for that game day.

The September 5 game vs the Dodgers is scheduled to air on WGN and ESPN.
As I'm typing this, the above game is the only one listed for September on ESPN. There are no Fox national (WFLD) games listed right now...but I imagine that ESPN and Fox may add some national telecast games. We'll see. Feel free to reply if you notice one scheduled to air. If you have tickets to this game, you'll be delighted to know that it is Derrek Lee bobblehead doll givaway day.

The September 7 game vs the Pirates and the September 28 game vs the Reds are both scheduled to air on Comcast Sports Chicago PLUS. Our local cable company doesn't list the plus games in their cable guide listings, so fans need to set their PVR's manually to record and not accidently miss games telecast on the PLUS channel. I've found that if I set this up in advance, the PVR won't let me record anything on that tuner except the game. This is on the dual tuner cable PVR. Weird, huh. I think if the cable company listed the game plus the pre and post game shows with a marker for the beginning and end of the program times, this glitch wouldn't occur.

The first game of the Cubs/Cards day/night double header on September 15 is a makeup game from the postponed game from April 29 when the Cardinals lost their pitcher Josh Hancock.
The first game airs on WGN starting at noon and the second game telecast is scheduled to start at 7pm on the Comcast Sports Chicago network. I imagine they'll have a pre-game show at 6:30pm on Comcast. If you're watching from the St. Louis area (or you just happen to get in these channels) these games are also airing on Fox Sports Midwest for the early game and on WSDK 5 for the evening game.

The September 19 game vs the Reds is scheduled to air on WCIU, which is available only in the Chicago area. I'd like to see WGN cable also air those WCIU games. WGN-TV 9 would air their usual CW schedule, but those of us outside of the WCIU reception area could still watch the game on WGN cable, which airs different programming than WGN-TV 9.

(I'd also like to watch the WGN morning news on WGN cable...but evidently WGN thinks more people want to watch The Beverly Hillbillies and Matlock at that time in the morning...)

The September 25 game vs the Florida Marlins is also scheduled to air on only WCIU.
Bummer!

September 22 and 23rd vs the Pirates are fan appreciation days. Hold on to your ticket stub thru-out the game.

Since some of my friends ran in the Chicago Triathlon on Sunday, I'll include this listing:

Cubs are 0 for WCIU telecasts

In 2005, I spent some time tracking the Cubs W/L statistics by which broadcast outlet (WGN, Comcast, WCIU, ESPN, Fox,) televised the games.

A recent Tribune article about the www.bleedcubbieblue.com website mentions this interesting statistic...

Quote:

There are the arcane stats, such as the Cubs' won-lost record by each of the broadcast outlets that televise the team's games (as of this writing, the team was 0-for-WCIU),...

My solution is for the WCIU games to be also telecast on WGN-cable outside of the WCIU broadcast area. I don't know that it would help their W/L record, but at least more of us could watch these games and cheer on our Cubbies play by play.

Study: Men Delay Going to ER During Games
Janet McConnaughey, Associated Press

Sample:

Quote:
Dr. David Jerrard's study, released Wednesday at a meeting of emergency physicians, didn't surprise the president of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Tom Scaletta.

He said he saw much the same thing when he was a medical resident and earned an extra $100 a game running the emergency clinic during games at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

"It was a two-stage decision: If they were hurt, whether to go to the hospital or not. If they needed to go to the hospital, could they finish the game or not?"

ON ESPN: MLB 2007: Never Miss a Game, Cubs game blacked out

Last night was pretty frustrating for Cubs fans who wanted to watch the Cubs/Reds game on tv.

The Cubs were tied for first place, the game had to be sold out at Wrigley and for some reason the game is blacked out on ESPN seemingly everywhere.

Here's what Tivo listed for last night:

MLB 2007: Never Miss a Game
Wednesday, September 19
11:00 pm - 12:00 am, ESPN
http://sports.espn.go.com/espntv/espnGuide

Evidently, Comcast changed their plans and telecast the White Sox game instead of the Cubs and the local Cubs telecast was on WCIU, which finally broadcast a winning Cubs game. Congrats WCIU!

(I'm way outside of the WCIU broadcast area. I really don't understand why the WCIU games aren't simucast on WGN-Cable, which doesn't carry the CW schedule and their viewers don't have access to WCIU either.)

ESPN also had the game listed, but from what I've been reading, it was blacked out just about everywhere. I found it rather ironic that the program airing just before the blacked out game was "MLB 2007: Never Miss a Game". Don't get me started!

Oddly enough, the late night version of the ESPN game was also blacked out.
If memory serves, usually the 2am version will air, even if the earlier game was blacked out.

I listened to an ESPN radio announcer boast about what an amazing game it was to see.
Yep, we all would've like to have the chance.

FWIW, I'd rather not get to see a Cubs game where they win, then get to see a game where they lose...especially this month.

Saturday's game has been changed and is now listed as WGN and Fox (WFLD, etc.) Game time is listed as 2:55pm on Saturday afternoon, 9/29/07.

BTW, as I type this, the cubs.com site shows tickets available for all remaining 6 regular season Cubs games on the road. So, if you can get to Cincinnati or Miami, it would appear that tickets are available.

Videos of special moments in Cubs History

The Chicago Tribune has compiled an interesting collection of videos from special moments in Chicago Cubs history.

Check it out at:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-cubshistoryvideo-html,0,4238369.htmlstory

Do you have a favorite video from this collection?

I'd love to see that 23-22 game from 1979 vs the Phillies air on tv someday. Perhaps on ESPN Classics or on WGN or Comcast Sportsnet...

Of course, I love seeing Greg Maddux and friends use the tarp at Wrigley as a slip and slide at the first scheduled night game at Wrigley.
I can watch that over and over...

I'd like to see video from the Ryne Sandberg and Ron Santo jersey retirement ceremonies, the Greg Maddux 300th win ceremony, and whatever they did for Sammy Sosa's 500th home run.

Extra long 10th Inning show on Saturday

It was mentioned during a Cubs telecast that there will be an extra long 10th Inning show after Saturday's broadcast on WGN tv. You'll want to set your vcr/Tivo/PVR's accordingly.

Here is what my Tivo came up with too:

Cubs Special

Saturday, September 29, 2007
6:00 pm - 7:00 pm, WGN

I'm still trying to figure out which channel (WGN or Fox/32) will air the game locally and which will be blacked out...or if (hopefully) both will air the program.

Not a whole lot of detail right now, but you might want to take note which channels are carrying the playoffs. Will those be available in HD ?
