2006 MLB Draft Open Thread

The draft gets underway today at 12pm CT. The Cubs have the 13th overall pick in the 1st round, and then don't pick again until the 5th round (149th overall pick), because of the signings of free agents Jacque Jones, Bobby Howry, and Scott Eyre. View MLB.com's 2006 Draft coverage.

1st Pick: Tyler Colvin

The Cubs have chosen 20-year-old lefthanded outfielder Tyler Colvin, a junior out of Clemson, with their first pick. MLB.com has these comments: "He has a good hitting approach, though sometimes he's too aggressive. He hasn't shown much power, but there's room for growth there. He has enough speed to possibly stay in center."

Sounds like he'll fit right in the Cubs' minor league system.

Colvin is hitting .359/.424/.622 for the Tigers this year in 64 games. That's a big jump from his 2005 season, in which he hit .287/.327/.449.

Clemson is playing in the Super Regionals starting on Friday, June 9, against Oral Roberts.
